§ Digital Sovereignty

A lot of your information is currently controlled by corporations, who can decide at any time to change their terms or lock you out. This isn’t theoretical:

  • Every creator on OnlyFans almost lost their revenue and customer base due to a decision by the corporations, only stopped by severe backlash.
  • Itch.IO delisted thousands upon thousands of NSFW video games, cutting off creators from their customers.
  • Upon being taken over, Twitter (now X) made a series of poor decisions that compromised branding, availability, and stability, not to mention permanently changing the culture.
  • The lead dev of ReLogic, creator of Terraria, had his Google account suddenly banned by Google, instantly losing access to email, documents, Playstore purchases, and the Terraria Youtube channel. He only got it all back after cancelling development of Terraria for Google Stadia in retaliation.

Every platform either operates this way (Enshitification), or is subject to entities that do.

You can retain control through Digital Sovereignty: owning your data and only using platforms you can swap out. That way, if platform A does something nasty, you can quickly and easily switch to platform B, and your audience won’t feel a difference. Compare that to trying to move an audience to another platform while your previous platform is actively stronghanding you!

For example, this Wiki is, as of writing, hosted on Cloudflare Pages and the domain uses the Cloudflare Registrar. But, we have plans for if Cloudflare is no longer hospitable: We can move the domain to another registrar while keeping the same name. We can move the wiki to Netlify or Bunny.net, and nothing would change on your end. You’d use the same URL, see the same content, all your bookmarks would still work. We don’t worry about a platform locking us down, because we can just leave.

You will need two things to get started:

  1. A Domain
  2. A Hosting Service

Note that getting a domain comes with some legal responsibilities. For example, you will generally be required to provide personally identifying information to the registrar to comply with fraud prevention, though there are options to help protect your identity, see on the next page.
